While choosing greenhouse plastic sheeting, I consider some key factors that differentiate the various types in the market. The most common are polyethylene, polycarbonate, and vinyl materials. Polyethylene plastic, specifically its 6 mil variety, is loved by many people because it is cheap and has good durability properties, is an effective UV protector, and has a good transmission of light. On the other hand, polycarbonate sheets offer better durability and insulation but at a higher price, therefore suitable for long-term setups where the return on investment is crucial. Lastly, vinyl sheeting, though more costly and less popular, offers excellent tensile strength and durability and is hence useful where frequent replacements would not be possible, such as in commercial operations. By identifying my greenhouse's specific needs like climate conditions, budget constraints, and crop type, I can then decide on what type of plastic sheeting will create the best environment for plant growth.
